Under the provision of Income Tax Act, a resident individual can claim deduction under section 80DDB for actual payment towards the medical treatment of the specified diseases or ailments and save taxes. Deduction is allowed for the actual amount paid or Rs.40000, whichever is lower towards the medical treatment of specified diseases or ailments of self, spouse, children and dependant parents & brothers and sisters. Further, in case any of the above is a senior citizen (Above 65 years), an additional deduction of Rs. 20,000 shall be allowed towards payment of the senior citizen. I.e. in case of senior citizens the above limit of 40,000 shall be upgraded to Rs.60000. However, the deduction shall be reduced by the amount received, if any, under the insurance from the insurer or reimbursed by the employer. For availing the deduction the assessee shall have to submit a certificate in the prescribed form from a neurologist, an oncologist, a urologist, a haematologist, an immunologist or such other prescribed specialists, working in a Government hospital. For the purpose of section 80DDB, the following shall be the eligible diseases or ailments;
- Neurological Diseases where the disability level has been certified to be of 40% and above.
- Malignant Cancers
- Full Blown Acquired Immuno-Deficiency Syndrome(AIDS)
- Chronic Renal Failure
- Hematological disorder
