10 lakh dealers yet to file GST returns: Sushil Modi

imagesAbout 10 lakh dealers are yet to file returns on the Goods and Services Tax Network, Sushil Kumar Modi, head of the five-member panel constituted to resolve the technology glitches being faced by traders on the network, said on Saturday.

A section of small businessmen have not filed the tax returns and the government is looking into the matter of compliance, Mr. Modi said. “New deadlines are being given,” he said without elaborating. “There is a gap of 10 lakh traders,” who have not filed returns after they filed the summary tax return or 3B. ”After filing 3B they have not filed GSTN 1. These are small traders.”

“It is a new challenge and matching of GSTN 1 (outward) invoices with GSTN 2 (purchases) filings is a big task and a new issue,” Mr. Modi told the media here. Infosys, which is setting up the network, has been told to resolve a new set of issues faced by the traders, he said.

‘More accessible’

“We have suggested a number of new steps to make the GSTN more accessible and user-friendly,” he said. It includes ‘incorporating more messages and 48 new items,’ that were added after the GST Council’s decision this month. The GST Council has paid ₹8,698 crore to the states as compensation, he said. The Council’s next meeting is to held in Guwahati on November 10.
