Non Resident Individuals (NRI) should obtain a Permanent Account Number (PAN), for transactions such as property deals, opening bank accounts, demat accounts, investing in Indian markets, sale of property, claiming refunds on TDS, to get a telephone connection in India, and many more. Previously, every assessee, irrespective of its residential status , would make an application in form 49A. But according to the recent amendments made by the department, Non Residents have to furnish their details in a separate form – 49AA providing all the information in a prescribed format.
The new application form applies to:
- Companies registered outside India;
- Individuals not being citizens of India;
- LLPs registered outside India;
- Firms or Association of persons (Trusts or otherwise) formed or registered outside India;
- Other specified entities registered outside India.
Necessary details which are required to be filled in Form 49AA are:
- Personal details: Name, Gender, Date of birth, Father’s name
- Date of incorporation, in case of a Company
- Residential address and office address
- Country of citizenship
- Telephone Number with STD Code
- Status of Application
- Registration Number
- Representative or agent of the Applicant in India
- Proof of Identity and Proof of Address documents
