J Jayalalithaa to face trial for not filling IT-Return 20 years back
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa will stand trial in her home state for failing to file her income tax returns 20 years ago. The Supreme Court ruled on the 30th of January 2014.
Vacating the stay order on the trial on chief minister of Tamil Nadu Supreme Court on the 30th of January gave a green signal to the Chennai High Court for conducting a trial, with a ultimatum to compete the trial within 4 months.
Income tax officials had filed criminal cases in 1996 and 1997 against the politician and her close aide N Sasikala after they did not file returns for the financial year 1993-94.
Late but not
“Late but not Forgotten” for a default committed 20 years ago the chief minister is being put on trial now. Taking it on a positive note atleast a politician is being prosecuted for default.
On being question about non-filing of IT-return the chief minister had claimed that she had no taxable income for that year, and therefore there was no question of tax evasion. Well that would be cleared on scrutiny.
To this the income tax department retaliated that it’s obligatory to file returns.
