Supreme Court slaps fine of ₹10 lakh on Income Tax Department

The Supreme Court has imposed costs of ₹ 10 lakh on the Income Tax Department for adopting a casual attitude towards a case and making a misleading statement in court.

A Bench led by Justice Madan B. Lokur passed the order on a special leave petition filed by the Commissioner of Income Tax, Ghaziabad, against an Allahabad High Court order.

The court found that the petition was filed after a delay of 596 days. The Bench said the explanation for the delay was both “inadequate and unconvincing.”
